Haven was formed in 1998 to buy small home-service companies that were already doing the work properly and were about to be bought by someone who would stop. The pattern was always the same: a good operator with twenty years of goodwill sells to a roll-up, the roll-up puts a call centre between the customer and the technician, and within two years the reviews have collapsed and the founder has left. Haven took the opposite bet - leave the brand, the crews and the name exactly as they are, and standardise only the one thing customers actually complain about, which is not workmanship. It is not knowing. Not knowing the price before the van arrives, not knowing who is coming into the house, not knowing what was found or what was done. So Haven wrote five clauses covering exactly that, published them, and made agreeing to them the entire condition of carrying the name. Four of the ten brands were acquired. Six were founded because no one in that trade was willing to sign.
